About Thump & Tote

Thump & Tote is an independent buying guide for portable Bluetooth speakers, written for people who want most of the sound for a fraction of the price. It is published by Magoo Media Group and written by Ryder M. We run no measurement lab, publish no test figures of our own, and say so on every page.

Why this site exists

Portable speaker buying is unusually badly served. The specifications people shop on — wattage, frequency-response range — are quoted so inconsistently that they cannot be compared across brands. The specifications that genuinely predict satisfaction are either unglamorous or not printed at all. And the review coverage that does exist tends toward a kind of qualified praise that never names what a product gives up.

So this site does one thing consistently: it leads with the cheap pick, names exactly where that pick cuts corners, and says plainly when spending more is the right call. "Where it cuts corners" is a required section on every product write-up, not an optional one, because a speaker with no downside is a speaker nobody looked at properly.

Who writes it

Ryder M. is the hands-on owner behind Magoo Media Group and the editor of every page here. He shops the way this site recommends: start at the cheapest speaker that could plausibly do the job, and only move up the price list when there is a concrete reason to.

That is the extent of the credentials claim, deliberately. There is no audio-engineering degree behind this site, no certification, no test lab and no panel of experts — and inventing any of those would be exactly the kind of thing that makes buying advice untrustworthy. What there is instead is a published, reproducible method, which you can read in full on how we pick and check against any page on the site.

What we do

• Shortlist from speakers that are currently sold in the US, not discontinued models that happen to review well.
• Compare manufacturer-published specifications side by side, and cite every figure to the listing it came from.
• Read the independent test houses that do have measurement labs, and attribute their findings to them.
• Weigh what each speaker gives up against the cheapest thing that would do the same job.
• Keep the premium option in most roundups as a benchmark, so the value pick can be measured against something.
• Maintain a dated update log on roundups, so you can see when a recommendation last moved.

What we do not do

• We do not run a measurement lab. No decibel figures, no frequency graphs, no claimed listening tests. Where we quote a measurement it is somebody else's and it is credited.
• We do not publish prices. Street prices on these models move weekly and a stale number is worse than none, so every pick links to its live retail listing instead.
• We do not run testimonials or star ratings. We hold no rating data, and a score would imply a precision we do not have.
• We do not accept sponsored placements. No brand has seen a page before it published, and none pays to appear.
• We do not invent credentials. Everything in the paragraph above about the author is the whole of it.

How it is funded

Thump & Tote is free to read because it earns affiliate commission. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Amazon is currently the only program we participate in.

Commission never decides the order of a list. When the cheaper speaker is the better buy it goes first, including when it earns us less — which happens regularly, because this site is built on recommending down rather than up.
