Editorial policy
The standards we hold ourselves to, including the claims we refuse to make.
By Ryder M.Last updated
Every factual claim on this site traces to a named source, every product write-up states what the product gives up, no brand pays for or previews coverage, and corrections are made publicly with a dated entry rather than silently. Where we cannot verify something, we say so instead of filling the gap.
Independence
- No sponsored content, paid reviews, or paid link insertions. We turn these down; they are not a pricing question.
- No brand previews. No manufacturer has seen a page on this site before it published, and none has editorial input.
- No free-product obligations. We do not accept review units in exchange for coverage.
- Affiliate commission is disclosed on every commercial page, above the first link, and never influences ranking. Full detail on the affiliate disclosure.
Sourcing
Every specification published here comes from one of two places: the manufacturer's own product listing, or an independent measurement lab, credited by name and linked. Roundups and reviews carry a Sources section listing those URLs so you can check any figure yourself.
Where two manufacturers quote the same specification under different test conditions — which is routine for battery life — we state the conditions alongside the numbers rather than presenting them as comparable. Where a figure cannot be verified, the page says so rather than guessing.
Claims we refuse to make
| Claim | Why we do not make it |
|---|---|
| "In our testing…" | We run no measurement lab. See how we pick. |
| Decibel or frequency figures of our own | We have no calibrated equipment to produce them. |
| Star ratings or numeric scores | A score implies a measurement we did not take. |
| Customer testimonials | We hold no verified customer reviews, and inventing them is fraud. |
| Author credentials beyond the real ones | About states the whole of it — no degree, no certification, no panel. |
| Specific prices | They move weekly. Live retailer listings are the price of record. |
| Urgency or scarcity language | "Selling out fast" is a sales technique, not information. |
How a page gets written
- Identify the question a real searcher is asking, and confirm it is a question people genuinely ask rather than one we assume they do.
- Shortlist candidate products that are currently sold in the US, including last-generation models still in stock.
- Gather manufacturer specifications and any independent measurements, recording the source URL for each.
- Write the verdict first — the answer belongs in the first forty words, not at the end.
- For every product, state what it does well, where it cuts corners, and who it is genuinely for. The middle one is mandatory.
- Link to the pages that would change a reader's decision, including ones that argue against buying.
- Publish with the author byline, the publication date, and a dated update log.
Corrections
We will get things wrong. When we do, the correction is made in the page and recorded in that page's dated update log, so the change is visible rather than silently overwritten. Substantive corrections — a wrong specification, a recommendation that should not have been made — are described in the log entry rather than summarized as "updated".
If you spot an error, tell us at contact@thumpandtote.com or through the contact page. Corrections from readers are the most useful mail this site receives.
Updates and freshness
Price-led roundups are revisited roughly every 60 days, use-case roundups every 90, comparisons when either model is superseded, and reviews when a model changes or is replaced. Year-stamped titles always show the current year — a title claiming a year that has passed is a signal the page has been abandoned, and we treat it as a defect.
Imagery
Photographs on this site are licensed stock images of the relevant category, not photographs of the specific units we discuss, and product imagery carries a visible "Illustrative" label. We do not present stock photography as our own equipment, our own premises or evidence of testing we did not do.
